Spence Heritage Press Stories That Endure

The imprint

We publish the books we could not find.

Spence Heritage Press is an independent, Black-owned publisher in Mount Vernon, New York, run by a father who kept looking for books his family could see themselves in and kept coming up short.

Mirrors and windows

A book should be both.

A mirror shows a child someone like themselves. A window shows them someone who is not. Most children get plenty of one and not enough of the other, and which one they are short on depends entirely on who they are. That imbalance is the reason this press exists.

So the catalog runs in two directions at once. The Young Learners Series and the Juneteenth titles put Black American history in front of a four-year-old at a scale a four-year-old can hold. The SEL Collection does something different: it hands every child, whoever they are, the words for what is happening inside them. And the Legacy Series turns the whole thing around and points it at a reader in their eighties, because the people in those pages were not history to them. They were the news.

What we will not do

We do not put a label on a generic book and call it representation. Every figure in every volume is researched. Every biography is written for the specific age of the reader holding it. Every illustration is original work made for that page, not a photograph traced and recolored.

We also do not pretend a coloring book is a curriculum, or that a picture book is a clinical intervention. The books do what books do. Teachers and activity directors do the rest, and they are better at it than we are.

Who makes these

Two people, one kitchen table.

Founder and publisher

Lamont Spence

Founder of Spence Heritage Press and author across every series in the catalog. He writes, produces, and delivers the books himself, frequently in person to schools and centers around Westchester and the Bronx. Based in Mount Vernon, New York.

Co-author

Tanya Spence

Co-author of both ChiChi Rose & Red Fox titles. More than twenty years in a classroom, which is why those books land the way they do: the dialogue sounds like actual children because she has spent two decades listening to them.
